  1. please forgive my ignorance, but do we have to re-download the Aftermath Hi-Rez Link 3 now? I d'ld back on 4/17, and it SEEMS to be there in full. I haven't burned it yet though, perhaps that's the issue then?

Any clairification would be most appreciated. In the meantime, let me take this opportunity to bestow more lavish gratitude for Prof. Stoned's awesome work. I truly am grateful for your time and generosity in getting these to us, and am looking forward each & every day to see if there's another one posted! The Hi-Rez I've burned so far sound INCREDIBLY good, I'm a vinyl guy through and through, and these transfers are amongst the BEST I've ever heard.

Thanks Prof, and please keep on truckin' :)

  2. @mmk: Not sure what you mean... Did you have any trouble unpacking the hi-rez files? The third file has been unaltered, just uploaded elsewhere because it wouldn't download from fileserve.

    Thanks for the kind words.

@anonymous: I happen to be working on a Stones rip at the moment. But I intend to leave Demonoid once there is enough trafficking to this blog.

  3. Must say listening to Aftermath the past night was memorable MAGIC. Big thanks Prof for all the works ..... I have now been chasing whatever I can find.

I am getting repeated 404 on FSrv for pt2 of Fresh Cream CD quality. It allows me past the capture as if it's there .... then File not Found.

    Cheers .... Dean (Mono Convert)

  6. Just want to say "Hello" Prof and let you know that you (and your drops) are missed. Hope all is well. I've been reading about your recent upgrades in equipment and can't wait to hear the results. Not pushing you for new product, just wanting you to know that we love your previous works and can't wait to hear the "new" stuff. Take care.

  7. Hey there prof. I'm a newcomer to your work but everything I've downloaded sounds fantastic. So thanks for all you've done so far and I can't wait to hear your future rips. :)

  9. cool--i love those guys! another rarity to keep your eyes open for is the Second Generation Woman/Hometown single (more associated with the Family Entertainment lp). the single is mono; Hometown has a completely different mix than common version with vibraphone overdubs (from Old Songs New Songs). i have a US promo copy--not minty, but nice enough to enjoy. i can post a very unwashed, not-so-wonderful rip if you're curious. come to think of it, properly washed etc, it could be nice. who ever heard Family on the radio in the US??

  10. Thanks for your work. But every time I click on a download link I only get to a text page with nothing to download. Can you help me. thanks

I'll try again periodically. Thanks again?

Not to press my luck, but any possibility of the Floyd 72 Tour Album going back up? Yes, I'm obsesssed with that one. Please accept my apologies for this request if warranted, I forget if such is a no-no!

  15. First let me say I am so excited about this blog!

A lot of us are transferring things into the digital domain, music, video, film, photos, etc. To see someone who devotes this much attention to detail is at once refreshing and inspiring.

And I totally get the whole mono thing, for example, the 45s you've posted are real eye openers - especially for my friends who've gently mocked my own singles collection.

I have a question - what is "high res" digital audio? Will it burn and play on an audio CD? Is it solely for playback on digital gear like computers and iPods? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tony,
It's for SACD/DVD-A audio burning or just playing from your computer (if you soundcard supports it).
It means it's higher resolution audio than the standard CD format. These are large files and it would probably only allow to put 10 songs on your ipod.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks, Prof.

I am certainly going to give DVD-A a shot. These records are very inspirational for this.

While waiting for your reply a friend of mine in the vinyl-to-digital game explained to me this way: it's like comparing a low-res .jpg file on your PC to a larger, 10 meg photo file captured by a fine camera. More data is spread out over a larger sampling spectrum, so the listening experience is as close to actual analog as we can get with today's gear.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey Prof. I believe there's an issue with your fileserve links. I Dl'd your Dylan single with no problem on Friday, March 30,but when I tried to get Cinnamon Girl and your Doors single today and checking the Dylan link again it's saying that only te file owner can UL or DL the file. I was signed in to my fileserve accont, as well.

  19. I see... This happened before right after the megaupload bust, but the problem solved itself in a few days. I might consider putting everything on rapidshare if it doesn't come back soon.

  28. Hiya Prof. I just discovered your blog and man, what a treat! Generally, when it comes to 60s music I prefer the mono pressings. Now I know what you said about requests and I totally respect that, so please consider this a suggestion. The stereo version (which is all that seems to be available these days) of "You Didn't Have to be So Nice" by The Lovin' Spoonful is simply awful, with the vocals all the way on one side. I would love to be able to listen to this song in mono. Thanks.

  30. Hi Prof! Can you please upload your Barclay MONO rip of Jimi's AYE??? I've been desperatly looking for this for ages, but you only have it on demonoid, but to make it worse demonoid is down. So can you make an exception and put it on a file hosting site please???

PS: any chance you have a mono copy of "The End - Retrospection", would love that so much!

Cheers for all you efforts on these rips mate!

  31. There are very few rules on this site. I refuse to put up slogans like "don't be fucking stupid", "don't ask me for anything or you'll get banned" and shit like that. I know this is the internet; you just have to take it with a bit of salt. I always try to be patient with people, as witnessed in the posts above, even if they are asking for shit that I had long forgotten about and do not necessarily wish to be reminded off.

But you, Sir, are close to wearing out your welcome. First, you unload your requests to me in a PM on SHtv and now you're here, making a ruckus about some old rip that you can't seem to find within 5 minutes. You top it off with another request for me to rip an almost impossible to find album.

The top header of this thread clearly says "I don't owe anybody anything, except working links." Now, this doesn't mean that people cannot throw in a suggestion or express their wishes. It does however mean that when you choose to do so, it requires some tact and restraint. Your messages do not have those two qualities and this is why I'm wasting my time writing this rant, hoping that it might save me some further irritation in the future.

I will upload Hendrix AYE in mono here when I choose to do so. I will not make the old rip available again myself. If somebody wants to do that, fine. But I have moved on, and want to do a better job on that one in the future.

    Prof.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Clearly on the wrong foot here mate. I was just trying to be friendly and thankful for your great rips. Maybe too many exclamation marks for some, I was just excited you know? Frankly, writing in text comes of wrong to some (different cultures y'know), but if you heard my voice it wasn't as bad as you've made it.

I don't do torrents and have searched the web and simply can't find this rip in 5 mins. Maybe it's time to check out this torrent buisiness, but demonoid has just lost it's head mind.

I think there's a pride thing going on here, fair enough, but I don't know why the need to remove a perfectly acceptable rip without a newer one, when others would be more then thrilled for it. I know of a few others wanting it. It's just a shame when someone's efforts simply fade out, they should be kept alive so everyone can experience the rare versions not easily attainable. But I will look forward to your new rip then.

I only requested this rip on SHtv (not an unloads worth) incase you might not of read my post here.

Maybe this rip just means more to me.

Sowwy and thank you for all your efforts mate.

Hey, who wouldn't love a MONO Introspection? ;)

    Peace

    ReplyDelete
  33. Maybe demonoid will be back, maybe not. I delete old torrents that are not seeded and leave the rest up for those who still want them. You have to understand, just because I once shared something does not mean I am responsible for its distribution as long as there is a demand for it.

I'm running this blog the way I see fit. I don't ask for donations, just want people to be grateful with what I give them and be patient. I do not wish to be taken for granted and be 'suggested' what to do. I don't think that's an unreasonable thing to ask.

    Prof.

    1. Yeah, why not. I can't control the internet, neither am I very eager to try. As long as it is shared freely, with no donation or other tax bullshit going on, I don't mind. I appreciate it when people ask first though.

I have said thanks before but since I have downloaded all you have to offer and have listened repeatedly and attentively. These are some of the finest recordings available electronically or otherwise. I have over seven-thousand CD's (I make hard copy of everything and leave nothing on my computer)and two-thousand LP's and the Dozen or so CD's I have made from your works are by far many of my new favorites. We have much the same tastes and I appreciate your ear, your efforts, your editorial explanations and the fact that you are sharing your labor of love with music lovers everywhere. Please let us know what you are searching for, if you will not accept any donations maybe we can help you find a long lost mono pressing.

    2. Thanks guys.

My search is a complicated one and it would be impossible to lay out in a couple sentences. Condition is (obviously) very important, but often times I'm also after a certain cutting or pressing. And finally, it has to be something I really like.

If you do, however, stumble upon a still-sealed or near mint vintage copy of an interesting pop/rock/psych and maybe even jazz mono album, you can always ask me whether I would be interested.

Eitherway, it's very good to hear you guys are into what I'm doing. That in itself is a reward.

  45. Just wanted to say thanks for some great work. I'm too young to remember this stuff first time round, but I guess I have around half of it in stereo - the mono versions are a revelation, and the rest are great discoveries for me. Oddly the only one which doesn't also sound fantastic to my ears, sound quality-wise is Sounds Of Silence. Clearly not a problem with what you've done because everything else here sounds great - I guess it must have been badly recorded in the first place. I've got no other source to compare it to though.

I also admire your patience and attention to detail. I have some pretty fancy gear myself to do vinyl rips, but beyond cleaning the record on my Okki Nokki I leave things alone. I just don't have the knowledge or patience to do the cleanups you do.

Still, you've inspired me to do a blog. My rips crackle a bit but they sound good - just need to cure a mystery hum my phono stage has - some sort of electrical interference I think.

Thanks again - and keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for the kind words.

RE: the humming, try and unplug your headshell from your tonearm. If the humming stops, you'll know your cartridge needs to be isolated from the shell. Otherwise, check whether another amplifier (I assume you use a standalone phono pre-amp) gives you the same problem.

When you're ready, please post your blog address.

      Cheers!
      Prof.

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately I don't have a detachable headshell. Also my phono stage is really complicated - I have a head amplifier running into a valve stage, which means lots of possibilities for hum which I'll need to isolate one at a time and I just haven't had time lately. Most likely moving the valve stage or re-routing the spaghetti of wires I need to hook all this up will cure it - mains cable running near the MC signal is never good.

Yes, will post my blog address and of course link to yours.

      Cheers.

    1. Hi Kurt,

FYI, I'm in my mid-30's as well.. And my system is really not that expensive, but it took me a couple years to assemble it as it is now. I'm happy with it, I don't think the expensive-gear people use at the other place adds something to the sound that's missing on my work. It all comes down to a good cart, tonearm, preamp and clean vinyl, of course.

      Cheers,
      Prof.

  48. My 4-year old computer crashed bigtime last week the day after the Mayall upload. Glad I got to finish that first, but what a pain in the arse...!

The prognoses; videocart, hardrive & powerfeed all toast. I backed stuff up, but quite a few recently downloaded and self-made stuff is gone, unless the company retrieves the data.

I've reinstalled W7 and now installing all my softwares. I could really do without this, whine, whine, etc.

Just found this great blog. Have a lot of earlier Prof Stoned vinyl rips from the old little green imp days. As a child of the Fifties, glad to see you are still ripping vinyl in MONO!!!! BTW, anyone know of any 24/96 or 24/192 rips of the recently released vinyl box done by those for lads from LIddypool? I understand the manufacturer actually used the 24/96 masters for the CD box set (only at 26/41 I think) a few years back. Would love to hear some of that if anyone knows where they might be.

  58. Thank you for producing these titles and making long lost mixes available for us to hear. I've grabbed most of what you've posted, and I must say that you're work is superb. I've attempted to make my own needle drops over the years with limited success. Recently a first press MONO copy of What's Shakin'. The vinyl isn't the greatest, so the 5 bonus track on the first LP that you posted was a vast improvement.

Can you give a sneak peek of whats on the turntable now? Looking forward to more titles in the future. Thank you again!

  64. just got the mono AYE vinyl, and I must agree with the good Prof, although on the plus side at least it wasn't as 'noisy' out of the sleeve as a LOT of other new vinyl seems to be these days. But oh what could have been... :-/

Hmmm...as an aside, could anyone recommend a mid-priced but effective record cleaning system? I'd love to get a nitty gritty but that's a bit out of my current wherewithal, but maybe there's something else out there? My old Discwasher D4 is on last legs, and I've heard the so-called newer "Discwashers" do NOT have the slanted fibers as the older brushes did. Any advice would be most welcome!

cheers, and thanks as always to ProfStoned for this wonderful and generous resource! Can't wait for the new drops to...well...drop!

  65. @ MMK. I know it's expensive, but you needs something that vacuums the cleaning fluid off the record, rather than let it dry. I have a VPI 16.5 and love it. I'm guessing you're in the States, so it should cost you a lot less than me (since I had to have a 220v version, and have it shipped over). Good luck w/ your search!

Today I remembered about your rip of the Sabbath single, that had been on my HDD but never got to the playlist, so I went ahead and put it to listen the songs a few times. I have to say that the notes on the .txt about the footbat coach looking for a song to motivate his team cracked me up hahaha.

    Thanks!

  87. Heh, true story! I thought it was hilarious too.

BTW folks, Q has done a Simon & Garfunkel Singles Collection, using mostly my rips.

  90. This may be asking a lot but I would like to know how many of The Doors 45's were in mono. This would include promo versions too. I don't know if Elektra(as many record labels did) pressed promo's with the same song on both sides one side stereo one side mono. As late as L.A. Woman. I would think that there may be many Doors songs in mono I have yet to discover. Thanks love the site

  91. Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On now deleted. Go listen to the new CD or the vinyl that's part of the box!

    Thank you.

  92. Wow, some ednorsement of the new Then Play On! Is the mix and/or mastering basically the same on the new vinyl and CD versions?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nice to see that a decent version of that fantastic album is now available. Prof, or any one else, have you had a chance to hear the new version?

  94. Yes, same mix/sequence plus you get Manalishi as an extra. Very good mastering job.

  96. I'm working on a couple things, but no deadlines.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Thank you Prof. for your amazing work. I'm in my early 20s and am just getting into vinyl/audiophile technology, and I value your experience and advice. I just have a couple questions, either for you or anyone else with experience in these matters. I'll try to keep it short.

First, have you or anyone else had any experience with the Ion Vinyl Alive Record Cleaning Kit (I have some second-hand older vinyl that I would like to clean but don't have the $500-$650 for a vacuum machine). I'm trying to find an alternative to the VPI until I can get some cash saved up.

Now concerning The Rolling Stones: "Beggars Banquet" and "Let it Bleed" were both released in mono back in the 60s, but are they true mono or fold-down?

Fleetwood Mac: was "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac" the only LP issued in mono?

Lastly, The Byrds: "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" was released in mono in the UK and (possibly) in the US as radio promo copies. Is that one true mono or a fold-down? It seems to be very rare and I can't find much info on it.

Thanks again for your hard work Prof., and thanks to anyone who may be able to help out. I'm asking these questions here because there seems to be more people with knowledge on these matters.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hi,

I have no experience with that cleaning kit, but when done right, it is an essential step in getting the most out of your record.

Beggars & Bleed are both folds. Except Sympathy for the devil is a true mono mix and it will be included on a forthcoming new share of mine.

With UK mono pressings of American albums that do not exist as USA stock mono copies, you can be sure they are folds. UK mono's on CBS even tell you so; on the label you will see the matrix of the American stereo mastertape starting with (K)CS.

Sounds like you need to go and discover the archives of stevehoffman.tv/forums where you can find lots of discussion on these and similar subjects. It's not a perfect place (no place with that many visitors could be) but lots of valuable info there, and some misinformation too.

    Cheers,
    Prof.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hello. I discovered Steve Hoffman's forum and signed up as a member. Looks like a great place.

Have you done needledrops in the past before this site was up? I have found things online from 'Prof. Stoned' but they are not on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yep. This here is my current "catalog" though. No old rips will be added, but some of them will be re-done in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  101. How do you decide which cartridge/stylus to use on a record? For example, on the "Fresh Cream" drop, you list the AT33PTG, while the "Aftermath" drop lists the AT150MLX. Just your current setup at that particular time?

Your hardware lists the AT33MONO, AT33PTG, and the AT33EV. Do you find that some work better with certain records?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yes, I'm now sticking with the 33PTG, but I've tried others in the past.

I should remove the 33EV from my profile. It's a dog. I used the 33Mono for the Coltrane rip, but prefer the 33PTG for nearly all mono and stereo records.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hello Prof. I know there are many discussions on this topic on various forums throughout the internet, but I would like your opinion on the matter:

Would you clean a brand-new, never-opened, never-played vinyl record on a VPI or Nitty Gritty before you played it for the first time, or would you simply use a carbon-fiber anti-static brush on it?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Depends. I clean the records that have remain unopened for +/- 40 years, but not so with new records that look unblemished. Or maybe just a rinse with water on the NG.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Just to say THANK YOU for all the terrific work you put in these needledrops.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Really enjoyed the Cream and Fleetwood Mac records; had never heard them in mono before. If I may make a suggestion; Jeff Beck's first solo album "Truth". I have heard that the mono mix is quite different than the stereo mix which is the only one I'm familiar with. Any chance of posting this classic in mono?

  117. The three S&G albums now have new D/L links, and so does the Tomorrow. Make sure to check out the new Japanese SHM mono remaster of the Tomorrow album!
Big Star is now retired. It doesn't seem fair to distribute this one, when it's available in perfect mastertape quality on the 4CD boxset. Thank you for understanding. I may do the same with the Tomorrow album in the near future because the new remaster seems to be really good (it's just not that widely available right now).

    ReplyDelete
  118. Thank you for your swift response. I now have the full 5 S&G albums and the Tomorrow album in both versions, as every other upload of yours because I didn't want to make a crappy job at re-encoding 24/96 to 16/44 as I'm sure your version is much better.

Well, I get your point about 'Big Star': it doesn't make much sense to do this kind of thing if a good quality version is comercially available, since I guess your work is basically to make available what is still not available to the public: a good quality version of the originals. Anyway, I've seen there's a torrent of your 'Big Star' upload and I hope I can get it in full (seeders are hard to find). I was looking for the 'Tomorrow' remaster but I've just found a japan SHM-CD import in mono. I guess in the future it will be more widely available.

Thanks again for all of your work. I'm looking forward for your future uploads!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Ah, now I see why you took it down before. It was released on the recent Tommy Super Deluxe box (didn't even know there was a Super Deluxe until now)! Listening to it, though, I'm kinda pissed they didn't even take the time to declick it when they took it from vinyl. I think I'll stick with your rip, since yours at least has proper work done on it.

"top-notch hyperdrive here" I'm amused I came up with all this poetic imagery to describe Keith and Pete's playing and Roger's singing. It made my day when I read it again.

  120. Hey, Prof. Stoned. Just found this blog. What can I say, I've been missing you since Demonoid went down (still, it wasn't all bad, while that site was a great source for lossless, it's downfall led to my discovery of an even better one, albeit in Russian). Anyway, looks like I missed your release of AYE in stereo. Axis and ELL are still being seeded several places but AYE has gone and disappeared. If you could provide a link, I'd be most obliged. If not, I understand.

It's interesting to see you're releasing Rolling Stones material. I may have to grab that. I've tried before to compile a collection of the best CD material and, frankly, I gave up for lack of time and patience and just went with the RMP set (which pretty much achieves what I was aiming for -- one of each studio track, no fake stereo, no fake mono, etc., just the original tracks as recorded). From what I remember reading back when I was trying to compile this stuff, the mastering mistakes made by ABKCO and London were by far the worst. So, any of the old their old 60s stuff you feel like doing is especially appreciated, since there tends to be no definitive CD versions of anything from that period, IIRC.

It truly is a shame they can't do a nice properly remastered boxed set for the Rolling Stones (or Jimi for that matter). Especially when we have the Pink Floyd Discovery series, the Beatles boxes, and the Led Zeppelin boxed sets to prove that "remastered" doesn't have to mean ruined (well, the part of the Discovery series I've heard sounds good anyway - being the proud owner of all 5 gold releases, I don't feel a strong compulsion to update those).

I especially can't wait to check out Satanic Majesties. I don't really understand why people hate it. Then again, I was born in the late 70s, and time has a funny way of affecting your perspective. I can certainly imagine Satanic Majesties as the "St. Anger" of the 60s (after all, we were all like "If I wanted Linkin Park, I'd have bought a Linkin Park CD" so I can certainly understand if back then they were all like "If I wanted the Beatles, I'd have bought a Beatles record").

BTW, love the new mono AYE, and that Black Sabbath single, wow, just when I thought I knew everything there was to know about Black Sabbath and Ozzy, this came along. Hearing it was truly a trip. If you have any more Black Sabbath planned, I can't wait to hear it.

Thanks a million times over for the great rips,
    --Naraku77

  121. I've noticed you still release two versions of your albums. You might want to rethink that with Foobar2000 having a SoX resampler plugin now (it's not just us DOS gods anymore that can do high quality downsampling on-the-fly). For those who might not be aware of this:

    http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=67376

Sure, you might be saving a few people who just want to burn a CD some bandwidth. However, I think most people grab the 24/96 regardless of their intentions or whether they can actually hear a difference (you can always take away, but you can never get back what isn't there). Besides, the mere perception that there's something better causes people to want it.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm afraid the on-the-fly downsampling is a bit too complicated for some people, so I'll just keep sharing the CD ready files.

  123. Hi there,
I only found out about your blog this a.m. and I just downloaded "music from a dolls house" which I'm looking forward to hearing, but when I try to open the file ( with WinRar) I am being asked for a password which I have never come across before.
Where do I get the password?
    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  124. The password is listed underneath the download links.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Yep, it's listed as "pass: profstoned" in case you missed it.

Prof, I'm still working on those Who tracks for you (you can find the Steppenwolf tracks on the shm cd FLAC torrent going around, though they're in an image+cue format sadly), but here's a quick-one off I want to share outside of letters. I love it when uploaders include scans, and here's no exception. Behold: the liner notes to the recent Fleetwood Mac TPO reissue http://ecover.to/Cover/Fleetwood_Mac-Then_Play_On_18_Tracks-2.html

Kinda cheap (scans of vinyl records, really?), but still a good read nonetheless. And if you look at the 4th pic, you can see scans of the tape box used. To quote someone else: "In fact, the noise floor is lower than on the orig UK pressing. I was surprised how clean and yet detailed they got it to sound, even though it looks like this was taken from an EQ'd 2nd generation tape." Chris Bellman and co. should definitely be thanked for making this sound so good. And now, back to the 'Oo...

  126. Hi Professor,

Thank you for your fabulous blog and the care and craftsmanship you put into your rips. I am blown away by your most recent Rolling Stones' TSMR offering. This is quite possibly the best sounding I've ever heard this record--beautiful definition and clarity of the instruments in the sound space. Despite all the frivolous controversies of comparisons with the Beatles Sgt. Peppers and blah, blah, blah, I have always loved this record. And your rip is a joy to behold.

Now, I know you don't normally take request. However, I would like to at least throw a suggestion out there: the original 1969 mix of the Grateful Dead's "Aoxomoxoa". I don't know if the Dead is something you were ever into. I wouldn't call myself a "hard core Dead Head". I mainly prefer their psychedelic -jam-band period up until about 1972.

I don't believe "Aoxomoxoa" was ever issued in mono. There was a big deal made about it's being the Dead's first 16 track recording. So, I'm pretty sure, with their new toy, the Dead would not fold this recording down into mono.

Well, we all know what happened. Garcia was not happy with the final results. He felt, that with all the experimentation and layering of sound in the multi-tracks, music was "buried" in the mixes. Thus, "Aoxomoxoa" was remixed by Garcia and Lesh in 1971, removing, in my opinion, most of the "weirdness" that I find very enchanting in the original mix. The remix has been used for all CD reissues since.

The "original" 1969 mix was reissued--finally--though only on vinyl, in the 2010 box set of the first five WB studio albums. I excitedly purchased this set when released. However, I was disappointed with the reissue of "Aoxomoxoa" in this set. When compared with the two VG+ copies of the original mix I own, the box set version has too much noise reduction. Both of my original copies of "Aoxomoxoa"--save for the light surface noise--sound much brighter, clearer and the frequencies, more balanced. My opinion of the box set version is "blah". Instead of returning a classic recording to it's rightful place, the box set presents a remastering, that to my ears, is muddied.

So, Professor, I just float this out as a suggestion. For all I know you may not like the Dead. However, it would be an unimaginable gift to "Dead Heads" everywhere, if somewhere down the long road, you could spend some time to work your magic on this mishandled artifact from 1969.

    Thanks a million,
Your restorations help fill in the blanks of our cultural inheritance.

    Kindest of regards,

    zog addams

  127. I like that album, but not a deadhead by any means. I picked up a transitional WB USA copy for a few bucks a couple weeks ago (one side orig mix, one side remix), and from memory I'd say that the orig mix here sounds indeed better than the 2010 or the orig UK (which I sold earlier one). I dunno, it's not something that's really rare though. Maybe, one day, when I've run outta interesting dedicated mono mixes to transfer. :)

    ReplyDelete
  128. Thanks Professor. :)

  129. Hi Professor,

I truly love everything you've done for music lovers and for music history. Your transfers of Tomorrow and Moby Grape are just brilliant, and I listen to them on a regular basis, thank you so much. The stereo versions just don't sound as good to my ears, be it the strange mixing or lack of clarity or whatever, so I'm very grateful for your incredible transfers and research.

I understand you don't really want to hear a plethora of requests, but like the previous poster, I would like to throw in a suggestion as well - Love's "Forever Changes" in mono. I recall reading that although it was a dedicated mix, it has never been released in the digital realm, presumably because the tapes are lost. I'd LOVE to hear some LOVE in mono! I'm not sure of your personal opinion on the album, but I see it as one of the cornerstones of psychedelic rock, and would be so gracious for any offering you gave.

Thanks so much for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Definitely on the lookout for that one. Did comparisons with folded stereo once, and the differences were even less noticeable than Strange Days. But audio quality was better on a couple tracks, which convinced me that it is at least partly a dedicated mix. PB did a pretty clean rip of this already a couple years ago, btw.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Oh, I did not know that. I'll have to see if I can check it out. Nevertheless, I can't wait to hear any offering you may possibly find in the future, as I'm sure that when it comes, it will be vastly superior to all that came before. Thanks, Prof.!

Thanks again for the landmark albums and beautiful transfers.

  146. Hey prof, just wondering, are you still looking for that first Prunes single? I recently discovered a comp that released the same month as your rip, collecting all the Prunes (both real & fake) sides, appropriately called The Complete Reprise Singles. Sounds great from what I can tell, the mono being properly centered (unlike on the Collectors Choice), and there's a few tracks for the classic lineup I didn't know before.

Shadows, I'm not sure about the history or recording sessions, but it was apparently recorded in the first sessions with Hassinger and released in Jan'68, around the Mass in F Minor sessions while the band was still together (away from their breakup in June I think). But anyways, if it's the classic lineup, it sounds great.

The Vox Wah-Wah commercial is another must hear, IMO. Again, I'm not sure when this was done, but it's apparently also during the classic lineup, and features some awesome guitar demonstration.

Anyways, just spreading the word if you weren't aware of this comp! Done by Real Gone Music and no brickwalling, as far as I can tell.

By the way, the mono version is spectacular!

  150. Now we're getting somewhere, what program do you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  151. Hi Prof

Thanks very much for your excellent posts.

I have a question unrelated to your work.

I am quite new to vinyl and was thinking of buying the new Beatles Mono box set. This will be my first mono vinyl purchase. I have already purchased an Audio technica ATLP120USB USB Turntable. I am unsure if these albums will play satisfactorily with my stereo cartridge or should I buy a mono cartridge to listen to these LPs properly.

    Thanks for your help.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Hi,

I've not read much about the new Beatles box, nor bought it myself. My guess is that it was cut with a stereo head (anybody)? Still, even if they went through the trouble to do it old-school, a stereo cart should reproduce it satisfactory.

    Prof.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Greetings Professor, I wonder if you've ever considered tackling the Mamas & the Papas debut album in mono, preferably from an original pressing. It sounds so much better in mono.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Anon,

Not Prof., but I'd just get a copy of the Sundazed reissue instead. It's taken from a UK copy tape, but it sounds really great. Plus, their recent pressings are done at QRP and are loads quieter than the previous done at United. Those Dunhill pressings really are hit or miss, anyways (moreso the latter).

    -Vic

    ReplyDelete
  155. Hey Prof. Thanks for all the great rips. I was just listening to your Wednesday Morning mono rip. Benedictus has a sharp high-pitched tone throughout the song. Was this a part of the original recording? I can't hear the tone on my stereo cd. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hey prof,

Sundazed just announced on their Facebook page the first three Lovin' Spoonful LP's in MONO! Sadly, for me at lesat, it's LP only, no CD issue... Do you have any interest? Here's a safety master tape box for Daydream they posted a few days ago... https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10805578_10152603262178791_1088358439247065916_n.png?oh=5ecc40e4e0c0c719236f999fcae97d93&oe=55171663&__gda__=1423222582_4e536ab2596a1a94799eaadfb0432256

    ReplyDelete
  157. Damn! I guess that's good for the people, but man... I spent 5 years looking for a still sealed US mono copy of the first LP, and now that I've found it, I won't be needing it. Well, assuming that a 2nd generation tape sounds as good or better. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  158. There might be benefits if it's not cut as hot, and by Kevin Gray, and pressed on stellar vinyl. Of course, a CD issue would obviate any of these issues :P but we're not getting one :(

They also announced the first 3 Ten Years After albums in mono, this time both on vinyl AND CD. Not sure how much interest you have in TYA however... (and I'll gladly take the CD instead!)

    -Vic

    ReplyDelete
  159. TYA? Meh... Though I always thought only the first album got a dedicated one channel mix. Well, the reason I searched so long for a sealed copy was that the used ones I bought all sounded distorted for the last half of each side. With the sealed copy that was reduced to only the last track of Side1. But, we'll see. Recovering from 3 days of Utrecht record fair now, and enjoying my new acquisitions. Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  160. Just looking at the Sundazed FB. I have to say, they are an amazingly cool record label in almost every way.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Yes, yes they are :) If you want to spend some time for a while, check out their Photos. BTW 20% off sale until the end of this year starting 11/27, better hurry!

Hope you got something for yourself at the fair and not just for this site! Without spoiling anything, can you give any hints as to what's ahead?

    -Vic

    ReplyDelete
  162. Sundazed doesn't always do good work. Their reissue of the first Left Banke LP was dreadful. Sometimes their LP pressings are markedly inferior to originals, but it varies from title to title. Their recent reissue of the mono "Safe As Milk" (same label as Lovin' Spoonful) was very good.

    ReplyDelete
  163. @Vic Hint: A prune is not a vegetable.

BTW, Sundazed just announced a Garage Sale for Thanksgiving, putting here for courtesy. See if you want anything for yourself here!

P.S. Beware of any CIA creeps that may be creeping around Laurel Canyon!

  168. Oh man, I can't wait for your next ABSOLUTELY FREE transfer ... I thought I read somewhere that it was mostly a fold-down? Alas, one can never have enough Zappa ...

One time awhile back I was perusing my local thrift shop and on a whim bought this copy of Dave Van Ronk & The Hudson Dusters for $0.25. I had never heard of him or this band and decided it was worth a try, since it seemed to be in pretty good shape. Was immediately pleased with the album, and immensely surprised when he stated "A prune is not a vegetable ..." at the end of the first song! Another great record yet unreleased on CD.

Anyways, sorry for the side-track ... :) I can't wait for your next update: it'll be Christmas ad infinitum!

  169. Not sure it's gonna be this year. As always, it takes time to do it right

  170. Hey prof, Bob Irwin has just posted another LS picture... (dammit I wish these were on CD!) https://www.facebook.com/sundazed/photos/a.73649413790.76612.58611678790/10152621982593791/?type=1

BTW I am rooting for you on the Zappa thing, good luck on that...

  171. ^ "Voodoo Man"? And it looks to me like "Full Measure" is "Pull Machine"! At least we know the mono masters are not destroyed ... Do you think the fidelity on these releases will rival the originals?

    ReplyDelete
  172. This isn't the mono master, mind you, it's a safety copy. "B-File" = Safety. But hopefully it's merely a flat 2nd generation one. As far as vinyl goes, depends. If it's cut properly with consideration for IGD (inner groove distortion) and pressed on-center, it could beat out the original hot cut. Of course, a release on CD would obviate all these issues...

  173. Hey Prof, I'm thinking about upgrading my turntable and I see that you use the Technics SL-1210 MK2. I have been considering this, as my AT-120LP-USB is modeled after that sucker. Would you recommend that deck as a good upgrade for someone looking to get higher-fidelity playback, or do you think there are better options out there (perhaps the MK5)? I also will be using a Audio-Technica stylus, but not a MC - I like the good sound but replaceable stylus of the AT150MLX. Thanks for your thoughts.

  174. Hi Prof. Stoned,

Thanks so much for the Leonard Cohen and Simon & Garfunkel mono offerings.

I'm curious as to why The Left Banke's material has never been reissued in mono. Have you heard anything about this?

    Thanks,
    Jukebox Lil

  175. I was considering doing a Left Banke mono set myself. The problem is...I am missing one single...Nice To See You/There's Gonna Be A Storm...it's nearly impossible to find, and I didn't want to release an incomplete set.

  176. JWB,
Thanks for responding. I will be waiting with bated breath for such a mono post (complete or not.) Believe me, if I had the single you need, I'd get it to you post-haste. It's not fun listening to Walk Away Renee and Pretty Ballerina in stereo (but do what I must, as I love the songs!)

    Thanks again for your work.

  177. Well, at least two copies exist:

    http://www.discogs.com/Left-Banke-Nice-To-See-You-Theres-Gonna-Be-A-Storm/release/5469829 (apparently belonging to Sandoval)

  178. Prof, your popsike link doesn't work for non-users or logged-out ones. Here's a fixed link: http://www.popsike.com/LEFT-BANKETheres-Gonna-Be-a-Storm-1969-45/2543649181.html

There's also a listing on 45catalog as well: http://www.45cat.com/record/s2226 Strange how every copy pictured seems to have a cutout hole... I wonder if there exists a single w/o one.

I've always wondered what the hell went wrong with that first album's mix. Someone on the Hofforums called it a type of "magazine mixing" (a term new to me), but it sounds like that to me... hardly any careful balancing of the levels, EQ, just sounding really sloppy. I guess the band never attended the mixing sessions for the first album and the company didn't care. The 2nd album, OTOH, sounds way more carefully thought out, as do the singles... I guess the company did care about the singles, and the band (sans Mike Brown) put more effort into the album.

BTW JWB do you have the Desiree single as well? There was actually a 7th song from the first album released on its B-side, "Something On My Mind", which you can hear here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRdVJkML7SA

  179. Prof. Stoned,
You might laugh me off the page when I ask this question, but would you (or anyone else) know if the first Peter, Paul and Mary LP was issued in mono? I've only ever been able to find stereo versions of their material and will stop frustrating myself by searching if it never existed in the first place.

    Thanks in advance.

  180. Have you tried ebay? Plenty copies there for very little (with a little patience you can even find them still sealed for little).

  181. Does anyone know if the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's first two mono albums are dedicated mixes? The first album is called Gorilla and has different track listing from US(deletes Big Shot). The second album is Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse(called Urban Spaceman in US...added the song Urban Spaceman). Any help is appreciated.

  182. Hey prof, just wondering, have you ever heard the Doors mono released by Rhino on iTunes and Amazon (both no longer there) a few years back? How does it compare to the original LP in terms of SQ? Here's a link to the Qobuz in lossless, only place it's available left.

I ask this in apprehension, since someone else on SHTV has stated that they heard the Rhino reissue of the original mix of Aoxomoxoa and they thought it sounded "dead" compared to the original...
