  2. Thank You. Yes, a surprise. I don't know much about jazz, but when You rip a classic jazz, I HAVE to download and try it. This never can be wrong. Best wishes, Yours Causinger

  3. Wow - I had NO IDEA this was coming! I like a lot of John Coltrane's music (especially his earlier stuff) and am looking forward to hearing this. Thanks.

  5. I am listening right now. What can I say - great rip! Nice silent entrance to tracks one, two and three(haven't got to four yet). great soundstage. Anyone who sees this should grab it, and immediately play it. Thanks for getting some jazz up here especially in mono (I actually prefer my jazz in mono).

Hope you have a good day,

  6. Great choice for your first jazz LP! Coltrane was one of the all time greats and this album is no exception. I've had a rather difficult time finding copies of his mono Impulse albums so this is really great to hear. Thanks for posting, sounds fantastic!!

  7. Cohesive ambience vs. individual instrumentation. I like how you put it that way. I've actually never really thought of that before.

I just simply can't believe that technically this album took almost 2 years to make! From the Vanguard to the Van Gelder studio, Coltrane was jammin' it all through the journey.

And nice job on breaking in the mono cart, prof.! Seems fitting to make its first album a fantastic and influential John Coltrane record.

  10. I had this from a version ripped by Kel bazar some time ago, but your versions, dear Professor, always beat anything else I hear out there, for the sheer detail work & attention you put into them. By the way, Rudy Van Gelder only recorded two-track, so these are technically fold-downs. BUT I've always found that even like this they sounded better than their stereo counterparts. I have read all interviews that are available with Van Gelder and he says that his main product was mono at the time and that a lot of care went into making sure that the two-track recordings fold down neatly to mono. Also, everything he put in the center channel (bass, piano) is 3db louder on the mono, which is intended. Thanks a lot.

  11. Thank you for your post, Crispi.

I actually did compare it with the stereo (I always do, God forbid I’d release a “rare mono mix” that is actually a straight folddown), and I heard some differences. The sax in Tr. 1 is louder and less compromised in its dynamics on the mono version. This makes sense, because it would have been impossible to cut this track in stereo if it had sounded that way (it’s on the left channel only). So, I guess this means that the stereo has more compression applied. The stereo version also doesn’t have the audience intro of tr. 3.

  16. Another beautiful transfer by Prof Stoned. Thanks so much, man!
I got the CD-res. download just fine, but is there something weird about the high-res. upload? I can't seem to get either of the links to work. Nonetheless, thanks for all your hard work on this one!

  17. Thanks for posting this great album in mono. Sounds excellent. Kind of makes up a bit for the fact that I shelled out a lot of money for the Coltrane Atlantic Years In Mono box only to find that it was missing two key albums (Coltrane Jazz and Coltrane's Sound) which were apparently destroyed in a fire. They should have just gotten you to do a nice vinyl transfer! Certainly would have been better than just leaving them out of the set. There are also probably decent copies of the tapes elsewhere which is how they ended up finding a superior copy of A Love's Supreme for the deluxe edition that got released back in 2002. But I degress lol. Anyway, thanks again for the effort in keeping these mono mixes out there.
