Who? Retired sound engineer who loves music from the 60's & early 70's.
What? My aim is to make rare stuff publicly available again with the best possible sound quality.
Professor I've never heard this record with such clarity before. I love the sound of this rip & pressing. This is the only way to listen to this recording. Thank you. bigdavej
Stupid query dept. Thanks as always for your amazing work-you put the major labels to shame! But now that I'm using a Mac,I'm having trouble downloading here. Any advice? Best to you!
This version blows away the Sundazed reissue. It kinda makes me sad for everyone, including myself, that paid good money for that Sundazed patchjob. Thank you for this great release.
Call me a Neanderthal, but this was always my fav from the Captain. I saw him in a tiny auditorium around the time of this release - didn't undertand it at all at the time. Live and learn. Thanks, Prof!
Thank you so much for all the time, money, hard work & most of all, for sharing the fruits of your labours with us. I particularly appreciate the 24/96 lossless files - squeezing this stuff down to anything less would be a waste IMO. James - in the UK.
Thank you for this - it was a wonderful way to revisit (and in a way understand for the first time) this psych classic. Listening also to Unconditionally Guaranteed and I can see that the Cap also wrote sweet love songs early in his career. Thank you!
have a stereo copy since i was teen, never came across a mono copy...til NOW...many sincere thanks for your efforts here. MONO "Something Else" by the Kinks next ??? one of my holiest relics is a MONO copy of "kinks greatest hits" that I unsealed myself a few years ago....did I say thanks already?
I find I'm unable to download your material on a Mac. Regrettable,as your site is fantastic. Anyone with advice for using a Mac here would be most welcome. long may you run!
I have this in stereo but, I decided to hear what the Captain sounded like in mono. Thank you for your hard work. I used to have an Acoustic Research turntable. It needed some work and I was encouraged to just get rid of it. Later, I regretted it. Nothing like a good turntable. Thanks again.
I have original copies of the US stereo and UK mono and I must say this one is a real blast! Thanks for the HQ rip from a pristine source and for your dedication in sharing!!!
I have a nice vinyl copy that I got second hand when I was about 16 and listened to constantly. The sound you got on this is absolutely stunning! Thank you so much! Dank U! Marc
I've yet to find a rip of Strictly Personal that sounds fantastic. Apparently there's a mono version that those who've heard it rate highly. I'm not the only one who'd appreciate the Prof giving us what the music industry has failed to! How about it?
Thank you, Prof. Stoned. It will be interesting to see how this compares to my old worn Marble Arch copy that I acquired second hand as a teenager and played to death. :) Cheers, Marc
Thank you so much for this! I was disappointed to read about the issues with the CD release of the mono mix. I have two different versions of this in stereo, but it is one of those albums where I wanted the mono due to early stereo mix styles.
The Anti-Negativity Police™ on the Steve Hoffman Forum insist that the Sundazed LP is wonderful and well worth purchasing. But I came here anyway to download the inferior original pressing. I want to hear what it sounds like through the expensive and highly resolving but improperly wired stereo system listed in my equipment profile.
One of my all-time favorite albums, although I have never been crazy about the sound quality. This is absolutely the best-sounding version I've heard (having owned two stereo vinyl versions, and two mono and several stereo CD versions). Thank you!
Curious if you knew whether the drums on Safe as Milk back in 1967 at RCA in LA would have been recorded isolated or live tracked. Soloing the L/R in the stereo mixes it seems the drums are very isolated sounding to my ears. This has had me curious forever as I always thought it was way more common to live track the full rhythm track together back in those days (aside from maybe DI the bass).
Can you offer any speculation / insights? I messaged the drummer John French who is still alive and active online. Maybe I will hear back.
The backing tracks were actually recorded at Sunset Sound on 8-track. Perry and Krasnow had a hard time with that many tracks (lol) and took it to RCA and bounced everything down with that crap RCA equalization. Supposedly the original recordings sounded amazing. But since it's Beefheart, we will probably never hear them.
Wow, thrilled to come across this, after reading about how sought-after the original red label U.S. vinyl version is, and in hi-res! You are providing a wonderful service for music aficionados, and it is much appreciated.
Really looking forward to hearing this. Thanks so much for all the time and hard work you put into providing such quality items.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the first LP of the Good Captain and well, for everything else!
ReplyDeletezaval80
Thanks for posting. Best sounding version of this music I've ever come across! Best, James
ReplyDeleteProfessor I've never heard this record with such clarity before. I love the sound of this rip & pressing. This is the only way to listen to this recording. Thank you.
ReplyDeletebigdavej

Ondra
Thank you very much, the sound beats the other rip that had been making the rounds. You're number 1!
ReplyDeleteOh and by the way, what Sundazed did really put a halt on my purchases from that company until I have verification of the source material.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for this for a very long time. Thank you so much, Prof.
ReplyDeleteCan't thank enough, this is historically important stuff ! Yours Causinger

Just one general question:
ReplyDeleteDo you keep the space between the tacks of an album, or do you cut/remaster each tack separate?
Thanks Prof!!!
ReplyDeleteFabulous rip! Thanks very much for your efforts!

This version blows away the Sundazed reissue. It kinda makes me sad for everyone, including myself, that paid good money for that Sundazed patchjob. Thank you for this great release.

ReplyDeleteSounds fine, and it's nice to have the actual mono mix available. Thanks Prof!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this - it was a wonderful way to revisit (and in a way understand for the first time) this psych classic. Listening also to Unconditionally Guaranteed and I can see that the Cap also wrote sweet love songs early in his career. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteThe best album the Captain ever released. Thank you for posting the TRUE mono mix (Sundazed version sounds like shit).

Hi. You mean this one?
Deletehttps://www.discogs.com/release/375767-Captain-Beefheart-And-His-Magic-Band-Safe-As-Milk
That's a reduction from the stereo mix. Mono mix was only released in the USA in 67.
Thank you so much for this! I was disappointed to read about the issues with the CD release of the mono mix. I have two different versions of this in stereo, but it is one of those albums where I wanted the mono due to early stereo mix styles.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all the time and effort you put into these treasures
ReplyDeleteI scrolled back and realized I had somehow missed this. Given your other great work I'm looking forward to it.
