  23. Electric Ladyland is one of my favorite albums, I have listened to it hundreds of times and it always holds up as a timeless masterpiece. Unfortunately, the newer cd versions have not really done it justice. To my ears they always sounded a little brittle and they somehow lost the organic feel that I remembered from my 1970’s era vinyl pressings (thankfully I still have those old records). The only cd version I had ever heard that did justice to the vinyl pressings was the 1987 double cd version mastered by Lee Herschberg, this was the one where they put sides 1 &2 and 3&4 on individual cds. For my money this was the best sounding version of ELL available on compact disc (and I still urge anyone reading this to pick one up if they see it in the used bins). I was not all that impressed with the 50th anniversary edition (BRICKWALLED) but the 5.1 surround sounded good.
So Hats off to Prof. Stoned for this version, it matches up to (and in some ways even betters) the 1987 Herschberg edition with a real clarity of sound without losing the organic feel of the original vinyl which is something most of the cd versions haven’t gotten right. Of course, all this is subjective and some of you out there might really like the current official release of ELL but to my ears this version really does it justice and most importantly sounds like I remember it sounding back in the day. Thanks Professor! And I’m sorry this was so long winded, but as I mentioned ELL is one of my all time favorites.

  24. Thanks for reporting. The 4 Herschberg CD's from the mid-80s are clearly all taken from superior sources. But I found them sounding a bit 'unfinished' for the most part, probably because they were mostly transferred as-is. That's just my opinion. All the other CD versions of the first 3 albums have problems. The 2010 George Marino vinyl remasters that I transferred are near-perfect, I think, although Axis could have used a bit more high-end.

  25. Thanks again Pofessor. Enjoying EL as I type.

  26. I always liked the UK Track but I'm going to listen to this to see if I should revise my opinion on it. thanks Prof

  27. This must be absolute mastery.

I never really totally got into this album as a whole. I respected it but I didn't love it.

But your transfer, dear almighty Prof. Stoned, made me totally re-evaluate.

With only a slightly above average stereo set-up I'm not an audiophile at all but I listened to the complete album more often within the last 3 months than the last 30 years combined (OK, I always skip the Noel track and sometimes also "Burning.." which I often place before the "Axis:..." album).

And the CD transfers of this are really not the worst to begin with, so I don't know exactly what it is but this sounds and feels simply wonderful.

You have such an appreciation for the artists but also the listeners there's only one word coming to mind: LOVE

    Thank you Prof.

  28. The late great George Marino mastered this.

  30. Quick note on the recording of this album. The Record Plant had a 1" Scully 12-track, not 8-track (which you can see in the photo here: http://www.recordplantdiaries.com/2018/03/20/the-house-that-hendrix-built-inside-the-birth-of-the-record-plant/)

This was used for a couple months, and then they started using an Ampex 2" 16-track.

The inferior quality of the Scully, plus the fact that some recordings were transferred from 1/2" 4-track to 1" 12 track and then 2" 16-track may explain at least part of the sound quality issues. Kramer talks a bit about it here: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-jimi-hendrix-experience-all-along-watchtower

  38. If this sounds anywhere near as good as your mastering of Are You Experienced, This will be a real treat! Thank you as always for your hard work.

  39. Thanks for this. it sounds very good. However, i have always thought that the UK Polydor 2657-012 1973 version sounds the best. After comparing the your version thats based on the 2010 remaster, I still think the 73 UK version is the best.

  40. Thank you so much, had this on Polydor LP since I was a kid and have been through all of the CD issues. But this version is something else.
