Who? Retired sound engineer who loves music from the 60's & early 70's.
What? My aim is to make rare stuff publicly available again with the best possible sound quality.
Thank you very kindly. I bought this record when it first came out, but never liked it and sold it in a moving sale. It will be interesting to hear what you have done with it. I really like your touch and am looking forward to hearing it again after over 50 years.
A HUGE THANK YOU!!!! This is absolutely Magnificent! Finally its possible to hear the Stereo Mix with the dynamic of the Mono Mix! I LOVE this album and its one of my top 3 of all time. THANK YOU so very much!
Thanks. Its such a pity you have used digital sources rather than analogue as this does significantly change the sound quality. But needs must. Great work. Thanks
You are of course entitled to your opinion, but as a high-end dealer/collector of 2nd vinyl who sold many copies of this title, I strongly disagree. The original UK pressings of this album do not sound as good as the sources used here, not even on the best equipment. Furthermore, it's analog that demonstrably colors the sound, not the other way around. Digital is exact, for better or worse.
Great stuff Prof, especially impressed with you managing to retrieve the drums from Apples and Oranges. Any plans to do anything similar with Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream?
After a late-night listening session over headphones, my excitement increased even more.....!!! Apples & Oranges: it sounds so different....so right....the drums and the bass carry the song now, and are not buried in the mix like on the original mono. I've always liked the song, and I still like MoR lp mix....but your remix is the first time I heard the song and literally felt what Waters was saying, the song had potential but poor production. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Ben
I’ll say it once, respectfully and hopefully: Are You Experienced stereo remix, pretty please with a cherry on top, whenever it may fit in your workflow. :prayer hands:
I am not an expert on the various sources and sound quality of this release. I have a few I have acquired or listened to over the years. This sounds tremendous. I think different is better in this case, but it's all IMO. Thanks so much for this and sharing all of your work through the years. I am glad you are still "at it"!
Thank you so much for this. Such a pleasure to listen to! Folks at Y! are very happy with your work as well: http://yeeshkul.com/forum/showthread.php?49936-Piper-at-the-Gates-of-Dawn-Mono-Stereo-hybrid-remix :)
I played this through a couple of times and your remix really works for me. The only thing that kept nagging at me was the final section of Interstellar Overdrive - the part you explain had to be a compromise because of the panning. To my ears it just sounds noticeably feeble when the group kick back into the main riff. I took the liberty of tweaking the volume on this section, just enough to avoid any clipping, and for me, it has made a difference. I no longer perceive this section as sounding feeble, although it does still sound a little lo-fi. No criticism intended - you can only work with what you've been given, after all.
I can clearly remember the first time I listened to this album: I was 13-14 years old (I'm 31 now), I knew nothing about Pink Floyd's music and I didn't liked it. Forward to a couple years later, in my seventeen's, now a Pink Floyd fan thanks to the Pompeii concert: I'm listening ti this album, walking on the street and suddenly the final part of Interstellar Overdrive hits me in the brain. I swear I almost fell, it was dizzing, the panning was horrible. Since those times I've grown to love this piece of art, even more in this year, listening for the first time to the mono mix and wondering why did I miss it all this time (less than one month ago I listened to this version while doing LSD and it was a cosmic experience). I want to tell you that you did a fantastic job, it is a superior job to the previous stereo version. One of my favorite songs here, Flaming...oh man, you really did it. Thank you, you are great.
This sounds so amazing, Prof! I had downloaded this and given it a quick listening-through when you first posted it, and was impressed then by the added dimensions and clarity you gave to the stereo mix. Since then, I've upgraded an aspect of my stereo equipment, and I re-visited this just now and I'm simply blown away. This is my go-to stereo mix of Piper forevermore! Much love back to you for this labor of love you have given to all of us. - David S CA
One guy posts a youtube link which bring us to a fan-made stereo remix of Lucifer Sam that was created from the original stereo mix.
https://youtu.be/lGkigDASF3A
So I listen, and this remix demonstrates precisely why the stereo is unusable as the source material for a demixed version. You hear how the sound changes everytime, the drums disappear and come back? That is an unwanted artifact created by the panning and phase trickery of the original recording.
Many thanks, Professor! Missed this the first time 'round I think. This is one of those albums that I feel like I really should like a lot but always kind of bounce off of. Happy to give it another try with your new version, which I'm sure will be the best presentation there is.
There is something about the abrupt end of Matilda Mother that puzzles me (example when listening to the original mono mix ending), but really it's a minor trifle. Maybe you had something on your mind about it? Genuinely intrigued.
The overall result as always is a positive blast and an honor made to this masterpiece, thank you again!
I stumbled upon your comment about Piper in the Beatles Rubber Soul remix post, it seems to fit my guess that the limitations must have been challenging to deal with.
Thank you for your version of this classic album. Many times what was released, even with recent upgrades, sound too sterile and cold. This does not. Bravo.
Once again, thank you for sharing your labor of love. An incredible amount of time, thought and energy. Finally have a stereo I'm very happy with and I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun.
Prof, Stoned, I was actually listening to your fine remix earlier this week, and was just dropping by now to say that it has given me incalculable joy. I’m happy to also find an update.
Dear Prof Stoned, this is Julian Palacios (author of 'Dark Globe: Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd'). Always been a fan of the stereo mix done by Norman Smith & classical engineer Graham Kirkby in a 9-hour sessions. Everyone else on earth likes the mono mix. THIS version that you have fiendishly concocted in your laboratory is what I have been waiting for. Its amazing. And I've heard every damn version of 'Piper' imaginable, but this is the one.
Fantastic work! Thought about doing something similar and very glad to have found it was already done and much better than I could have hoped to attain. Thank You!
This is great, absolutely a super presentation of one of my favorite psych albums!. Thought you had hit an alltime high with your 13th Floor Elevators mix, but this is even more fascinating. THANKS! (And please keep up the fantastic work!)
Prof, I'm listening now to your brilliant work on the early singles. I have to ask: In the notes to this wonderful comp, you say that "Piper at the Gates is easily in my top 5 of all-time best records." What, if I might ask, are the other four?
Cheers -- and keep up the fantastic work! My ears thank you. :) :) :)
Thanks for all the hard work put into this one, it might be your crowning achievement. I've always listened to the mono version in the 40th anniversary box, because I didn't really like the stereo mix, but your remix is my favorite by far.
I can't even imagine the work it takes to do something like this. I just listened to some of these and they sound heavenly. It always bothered me very much how inconsistent or straight up bad the mixes for this LP are so this scratches a very specific itch I've had for a long time now. THANK YOU!!!
According to stereofidelic blog today the multi-tracks were "Smuggled out of Joe Boyd's clutches, sampled in 24 bit and uploaded to a Russian server then dispersed via a number of 'secret unknowns' to a select few." It's time for a new remix.
Really appreciate this, plus that you included the singles (See Emily Play, Paintbox, etc.) as well! Thanks for the efforts and making it available for all.
I had long preferred the mono mix (2007 CD), but your stereo remix may now be my go-to version. Very listenable - and the added tracks (two of which I'd never heard) are a nice bonus. Thank you.
awesome work Prof, totally gorgeous. been attempting some amateur demixing myself but this knocks it out the park, this is now my go to for sure. many many thanks.
Oh I can't wait to hear this one. Thanks in advance kind sir!
ReplyDeleteWow! As with many who follow you I have bought several versions. Really looking forward to giving this favorite a listen tonight! Thank you!

DeleteGeez, another vinyl vs digital nonsense talk. What's this remix really needs is rolled off high end and surface noise.
DeleteGreat stuff Prof, especially impressed with you managing to retrieve the drums from Apples and Oranges. Any plans to do anything similar with Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream?
ReplyDeleteNope sorry, but I did remaster the 2010 remixes of those. See elsewhere here.
DeleteArguably the best rock album of 1967 which is another way of saying best rock album of all-time. Can't wait to listen to this!
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your effort and sharing. Great Job. Your ears are really perfect. I appreciate the person who love music like you. You are the sun...
