  9. Fantastic! I especially like what you did with The Night Before, I Need You, and Bad Boy, which rocks the house down. It has become a much better album, due to the vastly improved sound and balance. Bravo!

  21. Prof,. You never fail to dazzle us with your workmanship and as I probably mentioned before, the work your doing on the remix series is placing the bar much higher than Apple (aka The Beatles Consortium) has yet to achieve.

  40. Why would you use the processed mono box set version to do this remix? The "raw" Canadian CD would have been a much better choice. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'll answer anyway. They both appear to not to have been re-EQ'd and sound pretty much identical (to me). The old CD was transferred to digital in the 80s with outdated AD technology cutting off at 20kHz. And it also seem to have some dropouts which are absent from the 2009 source.

      Delete
    2. The mono box version has noise reduced song intros, perceived anomolies digitally removed, compromised stereo imaging and other excessive tinkering. The rouge Canadian CD is pure - would have been easier to work with and more legit sonically. But whatever.

    3. I'm gonna guess you are my pal J...

Sorry man, but as far as I know nobody has been able to pinpoint those 5min of NR. Also, there is no channel narrowing. It's easy to disprove that. Same thing with those 2 Stones stereo tracks "What a shame" & "Time is on my side": it was claimed by a certain somebody these were narrowed on the 2002 remaster, but this is nonsense. There is NO leakage from either channel on the other. There should be if it was narrowed.

Really, I'm fine with it if you think the Canadian CD is better, and also no hard feelings if you don't like the outcome of this project and how it was made (I already said it; purists stay far away), but if you criticize the source then at least use some examples of degradation that can actually be demonstrated..

    4. Just a suggestion:

Even if English may not be a person's native language (as it is not mine) and one has a different opinion or certain criticism about the sources used by the good Prof., this still could be voiced in a much mellower, friendlier tone with a little bit of effort.

Maybe in form of an inquiry about the reasons why a certain source was used instead of another.

Usually the Prof. answers these questions in a way that might also be of interest for the rest of us, as he even did despite the quite rude comments.

So I think it's helpful to notice that all this stuff here is free of charge. So the choice is for everyone to enjoy it or leave it be.

  42. Thanks for doing all of these remixes

  43. Thanks for this. Love to hear different mixes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure why all the complaints about the source, think the '65 mix from the mono box was a great choice. Only minor complaint from me is the distortion at the beginning of "...Hide Your Love Away". Also I prefer the '87 mix for "Ticket To Ride" but I do like how you've beefed up the rather weak original stereo mix of that song

  45. As for the criticisms, I don't know a whit about all the technical stuff. But I trust my ears that have loved rock music for over 60 years, and The Beatles the most. Your remix is great. And I think it's probably because, in the end, you go by your own ears as your "most important" tool (as you say) and ultimate determiner of how you mix. I can't wait for Rubber Soul, which I am assuming will be next.

    ReplyDelete
  46. As always, thank you for your work! Can't wait to give this one a listen!

  58. Listening to this now. Sounds really nice. I do have one question though. I'm wondering why the orchestral opening is missing from Help! Was it not part of the original album and added later? Just curious. Thank you again for your hard work on these.

    1. I believe that was added to the U.S. release of the song on the soundtrack album, and for some reason it also turned up on the "Red" double LP of their early hits, even though it never appeared on a single.

      Delete
    2. Did not know that. Thanks!

    3. I own a Capitol Release of the Beatles RED ALBUM, and it shows. Also, that orchestral snippet appears on 2006 - The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 - Disc 3 - Help!. It was an USA thing only, as far as I know.
