Who? Retired sound engineer who loves music from the 60's & early 70's.
What? My aim is to make rare stuff publicly available again with the best possible sound quality.
My favourite live tape of QMS. The band was at their peak on this one. I agree: the best thing right after Happy Trails. Can't wait to listen to your version. Thanks a lot! m-f
Prof. you are digging deep in my 80's memories with this jem! I still remember my 40 km "Vespa" trip to find this Psycho bootleg in a small shop: absolute joy then as today!
I love Vespa stories! We've got four of 'em in our garage (a '65, a '72 Sprint 150, a '79 P200e and a '90s PX150) and don't ride them nearly enough. Nothing like tearing down the road with a satchel full of vinyl over your shoulder!
Once again thank you very much Prof - BTW considering how long it was open would the Fillmore East hold the record for the most live releases from the one venue?.
The source material used here comes 3rd generation reel (not cassette), courtesy of Jeff Tamarkin.
this is incorrect. it was taken from my reel, not my brother's. i got it from a bay area collector who apparently got it from one of the band's managers.
Hi Prof. Thank you for the amazing work on this recording. The sound quality is amazing, and the performance is top notch!!! I will get to the next QMS in a bit.
Sounds excellent, thanks a lot for your work, professor! So great to have such fan's with the ability to transform the sometimes sub-par sound of great music.
So when I was listening to the UK punk and New Wave of the late 1970's, a flower child told me "you need to listen to these bands" but that "QMS were never committed to LP in a way which justified their cred and fame." I believe this offering, from you, to be that, and look forward very much to listening to it. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this. I actually bought the LP Maiden from the Cancer Moon LP in the 1980s from Funhouse Records (shop) in Margate where Psycho was based. They told me the tape was given to the owner by John Cipollina but of course this may be untrue. I favour the Maiden LP over Happy Trails but the debut is the best one for me. Incidentally, are you aware that an acetate version of the debut LP is available on bootleg. Six tracks: http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f145/quicksilver-messenger-service-1967-xx-xx-first-lp-acetate-stu-flac-547961.html Of course there are many boots with "outtakes" from the 1st LP but this one seems a little more interesting. Some surface noise typical of acetates but I know a professor (ahem) who cleans up rough recordings.
Many thanks for doing this one - one of the best live recordings of all time IMHO.
ReplyDeleteGreat band. Thanks very much.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much indeed!
ReplyDeleteTotally unexpected, and most welcome. Thank you. QMS was opening for the Electric Flag, with Steppenwolf as the undercard, IIRC.

Yes I'm aware of its existence. But unfortunately it only circulates in low quality.
