F.A.Q.
Who? Retired sound engineer who loves music from the 60's & early 70's.
What? My aim is to make rare stuff publicly available again with the best possible sound quality.
Professor, Just opened the file and I am totally overwhelmed by this generous Super Deluxe Edition. The treasure trove of material is amazing in itself but you've put your ears and hands to the stereo version of the album as well as the Live at the Avalon Ballroom recordings in your always satisfying demix process. Thank you for yet, another banquet ... blessings upon you, Sir !
Never heard SAM, but have heard of it's buzz with fellow musicians and album collectors...so now it's time and what better way to get the scoop from The Prof? Thanks, man! Peace, love and God bless.
Thank you for sharing. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. This is truly an amazing document. I'm listening to this on pair of Focal headphones as I type this. I'm absolutely blown away by these remasters.
Prof. Stoned strikes again: finally, a stereo mix of the album that's not only usable but also FUN, inviting you to enjoy this great album!
The suggestion that purists should stay away is really uncalled for here...the soundstage and the listening experience are 99% identical to the original mono mix...a small sensation that reminds me of the first time I heard Pet Sounds in proper stereo (I don't even want to think about how time flies). I say this with respect, but when I think of some of the highly acclaimed reissues of recent years by major artists—and no, I really don't want to name names—I can only confirm—one must!—that you're flying the flag for sound enthusiasts and music lovers, Prof.!
I wonder if the demix technology would work on Neil Young's Time Fades Away album? It was mixed live via a digital system that produced less than perfect results! It's always been lauded as being unremixable. But now, maybe? Well, thank again for your audio gems.
"Time Fades Away" is not un-remixable. And an analog master tape was made. It was badly-explained nonsense that became a wives tale and won't go away no matter how many times it's debunked. Just like "Raw Power" having been recorded on three tracks and "Like A Rolling Stone" being a one-take recording.
No 2 track master tapes exist of this album. There are the somewhat indifferent Dolby copies we would make while cutting discs for file and tape duping but that's it."
"Dunno. But we didn't monitor the copies-they were made as we were cutting discs-and they were not, in my opinion, top quality copies. Their purpose was tape duplication and file for recuts. On the reissues I did-and I did a lot of them-I ALWAYS sought to use the original masters."
Why he wouldn't consider that a "master tape" is unclear, because that's basically what it is. Recorded right from the multitrack, just like any other "master tape". The only difference is in this case, said tape wasn't use to cut the lacquers, the multitrack itself was.
Regardless, it's clear "from the horse's mouth" that there's at least one stereo tape, possibly several, that can be used as a source. And are equivalent to the "master tapes" of any other album.
Perfectly clear! Hope this whets Profs appetite to have a play with this much lauded recording! I'm sure he's the man who could produce some results
Btw. I'd describe this Beefheart mix as frighteningly amazing !!
Such an improvement in 'safe as milk' and then all the other gems Prof. You have been very busy working on these I can hear. Thankyou very much for your work as always.
I am so happy to see this! I already gave the live tape a huge makeover with X- to get the vocals high enough to be heard over the backing tracks. But you did me one better! I'm glad to chuck my work to get this whole thing treated with such loving care. Thanks very very much.
Thanks very much.
ReplyDeleteThanks Prof! Always great work. Excited to hear this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks
