Who? Retired sound engineer who loves music from the 60's & early 70's.
What? My aim is to make rare stuff publicly available again with the best possible sound quality.
Wow, what can I say. Amazing work, and an apology for not thanking you for 'With the Beatles' effort. We could never take for granted the hard work you do. We see it, and we appreciate you. And I am so grateful!
Thank you Prof. I agree this is the Beatles' best album. The band is working together as a tight propulsive machine and the songs have a freshness and innocence that got lost along the way. Beatlemania at its peak!
As an aside, who is that guy on the album cover; third row from the top, third frame from the right?
Prof, I was hoping you'd do this one too. Just like you, I feel that even though there is a Stereo version available it really doesn't cut it ... It's half assed thrown together Stereo ...it doesn't count. I dig that you went in and found details in the original recordings of this album that just weren't obvious in either they're stereo or mono mixes ( remastered or not). Thanks you again for the fine work you've been doing on The Beatles' releases .... Oh yeah .... love that Wilfrid Brambell is on your cover art ...nice touch. Would've loved if Wilfrid actually did do Zappa's 200 Motels as Jeff Simmonds replacement !
To clarify, the cover is taken from the movie poster. I had a postcard of it as a 6-year old beatlesfan and was mesmerized by it because it had more pics than the LP cover. Prof (I can't seem to post under my profile at the moment)
Oh, I'm so glad you bothered! I thought you made a grat album sound even greater. The clarity. The guitar parts I'd never noticed before. Long Tall Sally really kicks. And great to hear A Hard Day's Night (the song) without that tape damage on the intro. Keep going, Prof. These remixes are a revelation.
This is the best I've ever heard this LP. I'm hearing bits I've never noticed before. Thank you so much. I particularly like the gentle stereo effect, with no hard left/hard right placement, so that it sounds cohesive and integrated. Why can't the record companies produce stuff this good?
woah, didn't expect this album to be remixed, thought the original mix sounded fine already, got me looking forward to the Help and Rubber Soul(if possible) remix now :) thank you Prof! as always
jimmie d sez: For me, the stereo version will never live up to the United Artists US mono version. The mono single-tracked lead vocals on "Tell Me Why", "And I Love Her", and "If I Fell" are outstanding compared to the stereo double-tracked vocals for those songs. Additionally, the mono chorus is double-tracked compared to the triple-tracked stereo choruses. Paul's voice gives out on the stereo version of "If I Fell" (2nd time he sings "was in vain"), whereas the mono version his voice is clear. During John's harmonica intro on the stereo "I Should Have Known Better", John's harmonica cuts out, but on the mono version, it's complete without a dropout. And lastly, the mono version of "I'll Cry Instead" is 15 seconds longer (extra verse) than the stereo version.
Nonetheless, thanks for the download. I'll give it a listen.
Good Prof. I agree this and Beatles For Sale are my fav. early Beatles albums. Keep 'em comin' mate. BTW Are You Experienced could use a DES version and probably Axis too!
Unbelievably great work. As with the other early Beatle albums, I've never been able to enjoy the stereo versions. Your work has changed my mind and are now my go-to versions. Well done! hmalbrt from Thailand
Love that you moved the guitar solo in ISHKB to the middle. This solo really deserves the focus. Wish you will do the same in Nowhere Man when/if you do Rubber Soul (which would be wonderful!).
Thank you for these Beatle remixes. Excellent work, it really feels like it unleashes the sound. Hope you continue with them, the other early LPs at least.
Hey Prof -- first off thank you thank you thank you. I could write that a thousand times!
Second, to address something you said in the "Info" notes... > to me this is their best album.
There have been times in my life I would agree with that assessment.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the original UK version (i.e., w/o bonus tracks) is the only Beatles LP where all the songs are by Lennon/McCartney.
Kudos for the superb remixes of the first four Beatles albums. They sound better than they ever have, and I am thrilled about that, as a lifelong Beatles fanatic (now "When I'm 64").
I have one friendly criticism (if I may). When you re-mix the rockers, I think they are perfect: drums in the middle where they should be, and the right volume. But for the softer, more "pop" songs, I think they are mixed too loudly. Why is that? Shouldn't they be softer in volume? I know it's not difficult to have variable volumes. Generally, for my own burned CDs of these albums, I go with Lord Reith for the softer songs, and you (virtually always) for the rockers.
My second query is more of a statement: probably related to technical limitations.
For the early albums, I have noticed (through my speakers, not so much headphones) that the cymbal sounds come out as an annoying, constant white noise.
I take it that this is a remaining limitation of de-mixing. Can you explain that, if my suspicion is incorrect?
Thanks so much for reading, and again, for your (surely) very laborious (labor of love) efforts to deliver these early Beatles albums in glorious sound. I truly appreciate your efforts.

Thx for your review. My 'remixes' are what they are, for better or worse. I tend to look upon them as partly successful experiments. Please consider that the source material was heavily compressed, so the drum sound really cannot be altered.
"Beatles for Sale" must have been originally of a better quality when first recorded than "Hard Day's Night." I listened to both last night, and the former was so wonderful that I listened to it three times. It sounded like it was recorded yesterday. Your mix of "She's a Woman" was literally a revelation (the drum part).Kudos!
my sister and I saw the movie when it came out. I was 12, she was 8. The theater audience was screaming, just like in the movie. this freaked us out! - Santa got me the album (my 1st record ever) and a portable record player that year. Thank You Prof (and Santa)!
I just compared the 2023 Red album version of And I Love Her against your mix and it's not even close, yours blows it away. Judging from the few 2023 mixes available for the Rubber Soul album, it looks like your version will be unrivaled. Thanks so much!
Thanks very much. I'm sure this will sound terrific.
ReplyDeletethank you Prof! downloaded, now listen.
ReplyDeleteOooh! Looking forward to this! Ta!

ReplyDeleteLove this blog... Thanks for another great release!!!
ReplyDeleteLoving these... definitely worth the experimentation. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the work you do, is there a reason why 'I call your name' is omitted that I've missed ?
ReplyDeleteSorry, ignore that comment

Wilfred Brambell I think that's the correct spelling of his name. He played Paul's grandfather in the film.
