  7. Thanks for the great job you did on my fav Beatle album-extra TY for including two extra songs.

  8. Yours is now the best Rubber Soul available, and I doubt that Giles Martin can do any better work than you've done. Bravo!

  10. Hey Prof. Can the recent official Revolver mix be improved? Some instruments are buried in the mix. Your thoughts?

  11. Another worthy effort, majority of these tracks never sounded better

  12. It sounds amazing, i do hear a ghost track at the beginning of I'm Looking Through You...

  13. For over 50 years I have wished the drums on these sides were more up front. You've achieved that with no collateral damage. Excellent!

  14. Most excellent! Thank you.

  15. Thanks as always for these amazing efforts!!! I was playing your others all last week. Best way to hear this music on headphones, by far. I just listened to the original stereo BfS this morning and some of the vocals on there are just WAY too loud.

I did my own primitive "She Said She Said" remix after I heard the crappy Giles version. Hoping a Prof. Stoned Revolver is in the cards...

    1. Nice one!

Revolver is not on my to-do list, so this is where it ends for me. Reason is technical; the remix has undoubtedly better fidelity than original mixes but is not as suitable for demixing as the original wonky wide stereo mixes. Yes, I could give it a shot but I wouldn't be able to position all the stuff where I want it to be. And also, I like that my demixes for the most part maintain the sound and feel of the original. The 2022 remix sounds too different too my taste.

    2. Wow now I know why I don't like Giles Martin mixes... I can't even listen to any of them... What is he doing wrong ?

  16. Nice work. I listened out to see what you'd do about the dropouts on Day Tripper, and I think you did a terrific job.

    1. I gladly do some work for the sympathetic Think Like a King label from time to time, but please consider these are not really "Prof Stoned Products". Having said that, the Dr Strangely Strange BBC CD/LP was produced with lots of love and effort on my behalf and the forthcoming Patto remix/remaster CD is actually a project I devised and that TLAK was kind enough to turn into an actual release.

I have to say also that this record holds a special place in my history too.In 1967 I bought 2 copies of this album,my brother and I had a record player we called "Old Iron Side" wore records down after a dozen plays. But we liked "Rubber Soul"so much My brother got the 'Old Man"to buy a new BSR turntable at "EJ Korvetts" What a great album this is and I'm glad that you made it magical. Just like the others before it .Thank You.Oh ,the seconed copy I never opened it.

    1. I’m in love with the Beatles remixes made by Prof. Stoned, for me they are the most exciting happenings in recent times concerning The Beatles. Just the opportunity to hear “Love Me Do”, “P.S. I Love You”, “She Loves You” and “I’ll Get You” in true stereo in the best possible quality was a dream come true. Now I’m listening to the wonderful “Rubber Soul”. Thank you very much Prof. Stoned.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thank you-another great mix. Real Beatle magic!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you, Professor. What I really like about your re-mixing philosophy is that you don't change the overall feel of the album. Which is something I find to be happening to the Giles remixes — they often have these little tidbits that just sound jarring and out-of-place. I find your approach is similar to what Steven Wilson did (assisted by Robert Fripp) to the King Crimson catalogue. Of course, unlike you he had access to the original mult-tracks.

I cannot imagine the work you put into these, and to me it feels like sorcery. Not necessarily the demix-pro part, as that is handled by the software, but just your mixing in general feels magical. You have great control over it, and great taste to boot.

I've read some of your comments regarding whether to do the rest of the catalogue. However, I do wish to extend a plea for reconsidering. Definitely take a break first (can't wait to see what other music you have coming), but perhaps, just perhaps, you will find the energy to complete the rest.

(By the way, your Forever Changes remix is breathtaking, too, and resolves all of the issues I had with the original mix, while still feeling exactly the same.)

  53. Thank you for this! I can't wait to hear it!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Prof, could you indulge me by going into some detail about how you remixed Day Tripper? Every stereo version I know suffers from a couple of guitar dropouts (which George Martin's team covered up pretty well on the mono mix). Did you have to fly in similar parts from elsewhere in the track?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Did none such thing... Forgive my ignorance, but I wasn't even aware there was such a problem with that track..

      Delete
    2. The 2009 remasters were used as source material here which had the dropouts fixed already but also mic plosives removed and spot noise reduction applied and other nonsense.

      Delete
    3. Ah, thanks. Hadn't realised they'd fixed the drop-outs in 2009. I should pay closer attention.

      Delete
  55. You have the right approach in staying true to the original tonality when doing these remixes. So thank you very much for your dedicated work!

An idea about what could be attempted in the future: Why not try to demix the backing track of "Sour Milk Sea" (Jackie Lomax version with 3 Beatles playing!) and merge it with George Harrison's voice of his demo. I know it has been tried to merge them before, but not to satisfaction and probably not with demixing technology.

Also the best BBC tracks could be demixed to stereo, like "I'll Be On My Way".

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great mix while still maintaining the original "presence",unlike the new Revolver.

  65. This is a wonderful sounding piece of work - 99% of it - almost what I have dreamt of could and should be done to this amazing album. I am saying 99% and not 100% because my favorite Beatles track Nowhere Man has a problem with the split Lennon voice (amazing in itself that it has been possible to split it!) just after the guitar solo around time 1:05-1:10. The left voice sounds very thin and artefactual here. Sorry to say this about something which in all other aspects take the price for the best version of Rubber Soul ever heard!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry don't think I can fix that, other than to make all the vocals mono. Like you said, it's pretty amazing how demix managed to extract these two different vocal channels from one mono channel.

  69. I came looking for the Pink Floyd and especially Syd but the Beatles and Rubber Soul is by far the best sounding in that the musical integrity of the tracks is maintained in the separation. The bass and (bass) drum remain tight together in the centre and the widest stereo is kept for backing vocals and doubled guitar parts. In other words if the band was recording it today this is precisely how a classic mix would sound. Loosing the musical integrity and dynamism is all too easy in the quest for separation and this happened on a number of tracks on the recent Revolver remix. This Rubber Soul is way way better. The Floyd remixes are more of a mixed bag with the drums and bass often a tad too far apart and so loosing the drive a little, however the 2cnd Floyd album re-imagined is a treat.

  77. Very nice, thank you for doing this. Your mix shows much work they put into the vocal harmonies as you can hear the separate strands. I can hear the bass drum so clearly and things the bass guitar is doing that I'd never heard before. This record is so nostalgic for me as it always makes me think of Christmas 1965.

  81. Thank you. I'd love you to try remixing Cream Disraeli Gears and get Ginger Bakers drums more up front and make the drums stretch out over both left and right channels of the mix. I always felt Gingers amazing drumming on that album is poorly mixed.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Thanks from me as well! I admit paying much more attention to these remixes now that those red/blue remixes are previewing what else they can and will do with the rest of the catalog in the future. Having said that, I think that I am far more impressed overall with what Prof is doing (with more limitations of source material) over what Giles is doing. I was re-assembling a Prof. Stoned version of 62-66, but it's not quite, uh, finished yet... Hoping the series will continue with a Prof. Stoned remixed and expanded version of Revolver next in the series - fingers crossed! Whatever happens, thanks for this, and the others... Cheers!

  99. Dear Professor,

I understand you don't want requests and this post shouldn't be that. Maybe more of a challenge ;-).

Because in light of the ongoing series of horrible, horrible re-mixes (now also with de-mixing technology) from Giles Martin, recently happening with the 62-66/67-70 releases, I really think you should consider continuing your Beatles Stereo work until at least the Hey Bulldog recording from early 1968.

So in fact everything before the departure to India and, in my view, the final ending of the original spirit of The Beatles.

Maybe as an end note, a newly edited, de-mix re-mixed complete "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" even if still in Mono.

All your Beatles mixes are "such a joy" to listen to and, as opposed to the Martin mixes, are so respectful to the original Beatles sound, I think it would be really appreciated by tons of people.

So, maybe give it another thought. And if not, you're still the best.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thank you for this whole series. The early albums have always sounded peculiar to me. Your remixes strip away the distractions so the music can shine through.
