  1. No, I usually don't pirate commercially available source material....

This one is gonna have to be the one exception, and for a good reason: the official release is a lot less good without my additions & revisionism.

If you are reading this, you probably already have downloaded my separate Them releases "The Lost Decca Tapes" and "The Decca Vintage Stereo Tapes 1964-66". This new release puts those two together with the official 2015 release on Sony Legacy.

Once again, I'm not happy with the fact that I'm copying a readily available official release. But it's more important that a few people get to hear the compilation in this much improved form.

Spread it 'round if you can!

  12. Thank you so much, Prof.! Unbelievable, painstakingly researched and mastered. What an achievement! However, when burning the 3-CD-Set, I ran into two problems. First: On the burned CD 2, all tracks appear only as "Untitled" when I start my media player (which is VU Player). On CD 1, everything's OK, all track names are correctly displayed. Second problem: When I try to burn the 3rd CD, my burning software (which is CDBurner XP) tells me the 27 tracks need 84 Minutes and 36 Seconds(2 seconds pause between tracks included), which unfortunately is even beyond the overburning capacity I can handle (82 Mins, 42 Secs). Prof., can you check this?

    ReplyDelete
  13. The last track on CD3 is a non-CDR bonus. There's another mix of this same take on CD3 which sounds better anyway, so no big loss. The other thing is a problem with your burning software, since all files have the same metadata. PS

  17. Thank you for going the extra mile to fill in the gaps that are typical with official releases. I own the "Story of Them" 2CD on Deram. I went back and listened to it and with a few exceptions, most of the recordings they used are really bad, but you already know that. Even with my ears, this collection really puts an exclamation point on the complete recording of Them. I couldn't help but to make my own playlist using the UK discography to hear how the songs came out as released. Two things of note: 1. On the Story of Them, the old Deram CD has it complete with no break between part 1 and 2. and it's not from a really bad source. 2. The second BBC version of Gloria has the Brian Matthews intro, but I found that it exists without the intro. It can be found on the 1987 radio series "The 60s at the Beeb" narrated by Andy Peebles.

Edited together from the 'bad' source.

Listen again. The intro has been 'fixed' with a bit from further within the song.

  19. You really did us all a great favor with this one. Thanks a million Prof! You're the absolute best.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank You Prof,
Could you please tell us what original sources you used for the stereo mixes.
    Thanks so much again.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My little baby from USA LP Story of Them (London 1977)
Dress in Black from UK LP Them (See for miles, 1984).
Gloria & Here Comes from Rhino compilation CD's from 90's (forgot the titles).
Richard Cory (alt. 1966 mix), Gave my love (Take 9) & Half as much from 2CD Story of Them (Deram 1997) cause that's the only place where they appeared.
The rest from the old London/Deram CD's.

  22. I haven't made my way completely through this but everything I've heard so far is absolutely wonderful! Thanks so very much Prof and keep up the great work!

  23. I'll listen again to the BBC Gloria track. I didn't even consider the intro was a patch from another part of the song...oh well, it's not too bad of a fix. As for "Story of", I thought it sounded "better" than many of the fake stereo and some of the other tracks on the CD that had some wonky flangy sound. More of a straight up mono. I'll be honest, my ears aren't as good as they used to be and I don't have the playback equipment to really make a good assessment, but I do what I can. I trust your reviews, and I really dig your products.

  31. Great,great job Prof !
This is Christmas before its time hey ;-)

    Thank you very much !
    You did it once again...

  33. Many thanks Professor. You're great!

  34. I haven't downloaded this set of yours yet, but I just took the last 10-20 minutes or so to read it, and all I have to say is.... wow. I may need to read it again a few more times to absorb every little detail, but forget Wonderwall or the Beatles Christmas Album, this may very well be your coup of the year. I can already tell that much TLC went into this package. Can't wait to get it for myself and hear how it sounds. Thanks very much!

It blows my mind that there have been 2 previous releases of Them that you've done and I've missed... clearly, I've been gone for way too long.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thank you, Prof! A superb collection which shows your exhaustive research and knowledge. A fine complement to the official 3CD set which I have. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love fan's like you, who really do care about making the complete and best copies of material available.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Finally we get to hear this as how it should be officially released.

    Thank You so very much!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this. Much appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just unbelievable to have this! Thank you deeply. It will now be enjoyed as it was supposed to have been all along. Van the man was fierce; his vocals are giving me goosebumps that are a little harder and longer-lasting than the ones Jagger's Aftermath and Morrison's Matrix Tapes (bootleg NOT official versions) have been giving lately...

    ReplyDelete
  42. many thanks, knocks the official version out of the park

    ReplyDelete
  43. There are at least a couple of live recordings by Them that didn't make it to this excellent comp. One is "Here Comes the Night" (3:57) and the other is a lengthy "Turn On Your Love Light" (8:09). They are on The N.M.E. Poll Winners' Concert 1965, which is available both on a bootleg and on YouTube with correct video.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I serendipitously happened upon this and want to convey my thanks. I've never binged on Them, so it's been fun and educational listening to everything in one big chunk.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just happened upon your blog - incredible!! Being a Van fanatic, I of course got the 3-CD when it came out, but appreciate the extras you have provided here. Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  46. There aren't supposed to be new mixes on the Them set by Sandoval or anyone else are there? Just remastering of the original mono. Forgive me if I've missed something but then again I can't even download from your site anymore with a mac.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Great work as usual professor, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Superb! - Thank you so much.

  49. This is another band where I've been trying to run down the proper mono mixes....thank you very much!

  53. v1.0: 25-11-2016
v1.1: 06-08-2021 (Bonus DVD, Essay & 'Got My Mojo Working'* added.

    * This track appears here in mastertape quality and has previously *only* circulated with poor sound. Morrison vainly blocked it from the official release because Billy Harrison sings it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks, Professor.

I'm comparing version 1 to this new version 2.

"Demos, Sessions & Remixes" (version 2) differs from "CD3" (version 1) in the following way:

"Got My Mojo Working" (demo 1964) has been added.

"Richard Cory" (alternate take 1966 mix) has been deleted.

"Mighty Like A Rose" has been deleted.

Was this intentional? If so, why?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is it because both of the deleted tracks appear on The Decca Vintage Stereo Tapes 1964-66 ?????

    ReplyDelete
  56. They have been moved, not deleted.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thank you for your amazing work on this - the music and the info!

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's like Christmas in summer !!
    Thanks a lot Prof !

    ReplyDelete
  62. What an unexpected treat! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thanks for this expanded version!

Re the song Story of Them: If you delete the last 30 seconds of part 1 (which are identical to the last half minute part 2),
it is possible to seamlessly edit the two parts together (the edit point is at 3:22).

Apparently they just cut the 7:03 song in half, copied the fade-out and edited it onto part 1 to create a two-part single.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Can't believe I never noticed that after decades of listening. You made my day!! Corrected version coming up.

  67. Hi Prof.,

first of all thank you again for another fantastic work.

I have a small question and if you find the time maybe you can answer it.

I realize that you took the Stereo "I'm Gonna Dress In Black" from the See For Miles Re-Issue. Could you please tell me if this was the first ever Stereo release of that song or if not where was it first released in Stereo.

I'm trying to add the first release cat. numbers for every recording but I couldn't find any definitive answer where this was first released in Stereo.

Maybe you could share some light on this.

    Many thanks again.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, that was the first time it appeared in stereo (1984).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thank you for your quick answer. I really appreciate it.

  70. Thank you again, and thanks for the essay. It was very informative.

Really looking forward to a deep dive.
Fortunately for me, I read through most of the 90+ comments and realized that there had been an upgrade.
Perhaps it would be useful to post the link for the upgrade below the main link.
    Just a suggestion.
    Thanks again!
